Research shows that the UK population’s foreign language skills are generally low compared to other European countries.

The European Survey on Language Competences (2012) showed that at age 15 only 9% of pupils in England could express themselves clearly and deal with straightforward matters in French, the most popular foreign language taken by school children in the UK.
